How do you pick your free shipping threshold?

The rule of thumb is to set it somewhere above your average order value, so people add one more item to reach it. But shipping costs have gone up for most of us, and the right number for a store selling €15 items is not the same as for one selling €150 ones.

How did you set yours? Have you ever moved it, and what happened to conversion and order value when you did?

  1. A quick check: look at how many orders land just above the threshold. If there is a cluster there, it is doing its job. If almost nobody reaches it, it is set too high to change anyone's mind.
    1. Good test, and easy to pull from an order export. Sort by order total and look at the rows around the threshold.
  2. Do you show the threshold on product pages too, or only in the cart? I have seen both and I am never sure which works better.
    1. Both, ideally: one line under the price on the product page, and a progress bar in the cart. But it is worth testing on your own store.
